SPECIAL PROGRAMS

Special Education

Our school district offers special education programs for all children with physical handicaps or learning disabilities.  Our teachers provide a teaching/learning environment which enables each child to develop to his/her potential in the least restrictive environment.  The Special Education Department maintains a variety of specialists including school psychologists, learning consultants, school social workers, speech pathologists, resource room teachers and teachers of the handicapped.

The district refers any child who qualifies for special education programs to the Child Study Team, which consists of a learning consultant, school psychologist and social worker.  With the help of these people and a variety of techniques and materials, the school district will develop an appropriate individualized education program for students with emotional, physical or school-adjustment problems.

BASIC SKILLS

The district offers a Basic Skills Education Program to identified students in grades K-12 whose math, reading or language arts scores on standardized tests fall below state-mandated proficiency levels.  These students receive special assistance in reading, math and /or writing.

GUIDANCE SERVICES

Our school district provides an extensive guidance network for all students.

Counselors, who are available for students at all grade levels, deliver guidance services to students and address personal concerns, academic situations and college career planning.  Our school district views guidance as a continuous process that deals with the total development of each individual student throughout the 13 years of education.

The guidance programs aid each pupil in self-development, decision-making skills, preparing for life in an interdependent society and understanding rights and responsibilities.

ENGLISH as a SECOND LANGUAGE

Our district offers an English as a Second Language Program (ESL) for students with non or limited English speaking ability.  State law requires school districts with 10 or more such students to provide this program.
